How Cosmetic Brands Brief a Factory for Custom Paper Boxes
Cosmetic packaging briefs fail when they describe the brand mood and skip the bottle. A factory can match a color reference. It cannot invent a stable fit around a pump, a jar and a carton that were never measured together.
This cosmetic packaging factory brief is written for brand owners and packaging buyers who will send an RFQ to a paper-box plant. Industry context is on Cosmetic Packaging. Folding cartons used in those programs are on Paper Boxes. Related bottle programs also appear under Skincare Packaging and Perfume Packaging.
Measure the primary pack first

Send bottle or compact dimensions, cap height, and whether the unit ships with a carton, a sleeve, a rigid gift box or a mailer. If the line is a set, list each component. A “kit box” without a packing map is the usual reason a sample comes back with wasted void or a crushed cap.
Include the pump throw if the bottle will sit under a lid. Include the collar if a carton must clear it. A pack shot from the campaign is useful; a dimensioned photo is better. If the bottle is still in mold, say which dimension may move.
Say what the paper pack is for
Retail folding cartons, gift sets and e-commerce outers are different structures. A foil-stamped carton for the counter and a corrugated mailer for DTC should be briefed as two items, even when they share artwork. If only one structure is needed for launch, say which channel it has to survive.
A rigid gift box around a bottle is a presentation pack. A folding carton around the same bottle is a retail unit. Do not call both “the box” in one quantity line. See rigid box vs folding carton if the structure is still open.
Print, color and claims
Provide Pantone or a printed drawdown when color is critical. Foil, emboss and spot UV should be marked on the dieline, not described as “make it look premium.” Do not ask the factory to write recyclability or food-contact claims on the pack unless you already have the wording and the matching certificate path.
Certificate copies for the plant — ISO 9001, ISO 14001, FSC, SGS, Sedex SMETA, REACH and the SC food-contact license where it applies — can be requested with the quote when your vendor file needs them. They are listed on Factory. Do not invent certificate numbers in the brief.
What belongs in the first email
- Each SKU size and a photo or pack shot
- Carton vs gift box vs mailer
- Quantity range and launch market
- Artwork or a marked dieline
- Insert or tray only if the product will move in transit
- Whether several bottles share one set box
Send that brief to Get a Quote. Jiayi Packaging will confirm structure options against the bottles you actually ship, not against a generic cosmetic box.

Color, foil and what “premium” actually changes
Beauty teams often brief “premium” as a finish list: soft-touch, foil, emboss, spot UV. Each process is a plate or a pass. On a first launch, one special finish on the logo is easier to control than four finishes on a carton that is still changing height. Soft-touch and other specialty coatings can be reviewed on quote when the structure allows; they are not assumed on every cosmetic carton.
If two SKUs must look like a family, say which panel is shared and which panel carries the product name. A factory can keep one foil die across a line only if the logo position is stable.
Sampling without resetting the line
Approve a white carton or a white rigid box on the live bottle before print. If the pump height changes after the printed sample, you will pay for that change twice. If a gift set adds a vial late, the insert dies again. Write “no further SKU adds after white sample” if the launch date is fixed.
MOQ, board caliper and lead time stay on the quote. Beauty calendars are tight; a complete brief is faster than a pretty incomplete one.
Why Choose Jiayi Packaging
Cosmetic work is a fit job. Jiayi Packaging already shows folding cartons, magnetic boxes and paper tubes on the cosmetic and skincare solution pages, and the same Shenzhen plant can sample more than one structure when the bottle is still deciding. Packaging work dates back to 2007; research and production sit together.
The brief above is what that plant needs. Mood language can wait until the cavity is right.
FAQ: cosmetic packaging factory brief
Do I need a dieline for a first cosmetic quote?
No. Bottle size and channel are enough to propose a carton or a gift box. A dieline helps if your designer already has one.
Can one gift box hold the whole launch kit?
Only if the packing map is stable. If vials may be added, say so and expect the insert to be the item that changes.
Should I specify FSC paper in the first email?
Yes, if a retailer requires it. Ask for FSC as a material option on quote. Do not print an FSC mark unless the chain-of-custody path is confirmed for that order.
A practical next step
Photograph the bottles, write the channel, and send the list. Do not start with “luxury cosmetic packaging” as the only line.
