When fold-flat is worth it

When the packing line is slow and labor is tight, a set-up box can still be the cheaper total. Ask for both structures on the same size if you are unsure. The quote should show empty-carton freight as well as unit price. A cheaper unit that wastes a container is not cheaper.
What does not change
You still need a white sample for fit. The magnet still has to catch. The insert still has to hold. Collapsible geometry can change how the lid sits, so do not reuse a set-up dieline without a new sample.

What to say on the brief
Write “collapsible / fold-flat magnetic” and the product L × W × H. Say whether staff will pop the box up in a store or in a fulfillment center. If a paper sleeve must stay registered after folding, say so — that is a common fail.
Say how many times the box will be collapsed in testing. A sample that looks fine once can crease after a week of warehouse handling. If the box is a keep-sake the customer will reopen, the crease is part of the brand moment. Decide whether that is acceptable before you print a dark wrap that shows every fold.
Assembly and the packing line
Fold-flat saves inbound space. It spends seconds on the line. If a third-party warehouse packs for you, send them the pop-up steps with the first carton. A structure the factory understands can still fail if the packer forces a wall and cracks the wrap.
Ask for a short assembly note with the sample: which wall goes first, and whether the magnet should be closed for storage. A box stored assembled in a humid warehouse is no longer a fold-flat program.
If retail staff must assemble on the floor, test that with the people who will do it, not only with the sampling desk. A collapse that needs a jig will not be used at peak.
If you also need a mailer, size the mailer to the assembled box, not to the flat stack. Over-boxing starts when someone measures the pallet of flats.
