Confectionery packaging

Custom Chocolate Packaging

Custom paper-based packaging for chocolate, confectionery and gift sets, developed around piece count, product dimensions, tray layout, presentation requirements and the way the finished pack will be handled or shipped.

Packaging Challenges We Solve

Chocolate packaging is a tray and layout problem before it is a print problem. Piece count, cavity size and how the box is filled decide the outer. This page does not claim melting control, freshness, shelf-life or contamination protection.

  • Piece count and layout
A 9-piece, 12-piece or 16-piece assortment usually needs a different tray. The insert is developed from the actual chocolate dimensions and count. A later count change means a new inner die, even if the lid graphic stays in the same family.
  • Product fit
Pieces may differ in size, shape and wrap. Cavity size follows the largest outline, including foil wrap when the piece is already wrapped. A well drawn for one shape will not hold another.
  • Gift presentation
Gift chocolate often needs a presentation lid — a rigid gift box, a magnetic box, or a lid-and-base construction. Lid size follows the tray, not the other way around.
  • Seasonal packaging
When piece size and count stay the same, a sleeve, wrap or artwork change can refresh a collection. A new count still needs a new tray.
  • Shipping and handling
If the gift box ships as a parcel, an outer mailer or shipper can be considered. The presentation lid is not assumed to be the only outer.

Chocolate Packaging Structures

An assortment gift, a lighter seasonal carton and a shipped gift set often need different constructions. The matches below are starting points — piece count, tray size and how the pack is filled or shipped decide the structure.

Folding Paper Boxes

Typical use: lighter chocolate packs and seasonal retail cartons.

What affects the spec: bar or piece size, fill method and whether a tray is still required inside the carton.

When it may be suitable: when a folding wall is enough and presentation does not need a rigid lid. See paper boxes.

Rigid Gift Boxes

Typical use: assortments and gift sets that need a presentation lid.

What affects the spec: tray footprint, lid height over the filled wells, and how the box is opened.

When it may be suitable: when the box is part of the gift. See gift boxes. A published example is the Custom Chocolate Gift Box project.

Magnetic / Foldable Rigid Boxes

Typical use: gift collections that need a controlled open and a square well for a tray.

What affects the spec: lid clearance over the filled tray, and whether the empty box must fold flatter.

When it may be suitable: when presentation opening matters. Not every magnetic box is fold-flat. See magnetic boxes.

Sleeves & Wraps

Typical use: seasonal artwork on a box or tray whose inner size stays the same.

What affects the spec: locked outer dimensions and how the sleeve slides or wraps.

When it may be suitable: when the tray and box size are already confirmed and only the face needs to change. A new piece count still needs a new tray.

Mailer / Shipping Boxes

Typical use: an outer pack when a chocolate gift box ships as a parcel.

What affects the spec: the closed size of the presentation box and how the mailer closes.

When it may be suitable: when fulfillment is a separate job from the gift lid. See mailer shipping boxes.

Recommended Packaging Formats

These formats are already on the site. Start from the gift or folding carton and the tray, then add a mailer when the finished pack also ships as a parcel.

Custom Inserts for Chocolate Products

Chocolate trays are developed around piece dimensions, piece count, cavity spacing, orientation, wrap thickness, how the box is loaded, and how the open pack should look. A 9-piece tray is not a 16-piece tray with empty wells left over.

Paperboard or card inserts are common when the outline can be cut. Molded pulp can be considered when a formed tray fits the pieces. Final cavity size is confirmed during development and sampling. An insert does not automatically prevent damage in handling or transit.

Food-contact suitability is confirmed according to the specific product, material and intended application. It should not be assumed from the packaging structure alone. A tray that holds already-wrapped pieces is a different brief from a surface that may touch unwrapped chocolate.

Broader insert options are on how to choose packaging inserts.

Materials, Printing & Finishing

Folding paperboard is used for lighter cartons. Art paper over greyboard is common on a rigid gift lid. Kraft can be used where a quieter wrap is specified. Corrugated board is for an outer shipper. Molded pulp or paper inserts are chosen from the piece outline. Material follows structure, quantity and how the pack is presented or shipped — confirmed on the quote and sample.

CMYK and Pantone are usual print routes. Foil, embossing or debossing, matte or gloss lamination, and spot UV can be placed after the lid or panel size is locked. Finishing is chosen with the structure, not as a default list for every confectionery lid.

How We Develop Custom Chocolate Packaging

01

Product Requirements

We review chocolate dimensions, piece count, quantity, packaging purpose, filling method and reference images.

02

Structure & Insert Development

The outer box and tray are developed around the product dimensions and the required presentation.

03

Material & Finishing Selection

Board, wrap, printing and finishing are confirmed from the selected structure.

04

Prototype / Sample

A sample is used to check dimensions, tray fit, opening, loading and finishing.

05

Production & Quality Control

After approval, production follows the confirmed specification. Layout, lid fit and finish are checked against the approved sample.

How Jiayi develops structure, sampling and production is described on custom packaging development. Sample and production timing are confirmed on the quotation according to structure, material, quantity and production requirements. To start a brief, contact Jiayi Packaging.

Representative Packaging Project

This is a representative packaging example, not a specific customer case.

The example below is a rigid gift box with a custom tray for a chocolate assortment. A published gift-box example is on the Custom Chocolate Gift Box project page. That page is a separate document; this section does not invent a customer, country or commercial result.

Packaging Example: Chocolate Gift Box with Custom Tray

Packaging Type Rigid gift box for a chocolate assortment
Structure Lid-and-base gift box developed around the tray footprint
Insert Custom tray with cavities drawn from piece count and piece dimensions
Material Greyboard wrapped with printed art paper; tray material confirmed with the brief
Print / Finish Artwork and finishing placed after structure and lid size are locked

The Brief

A chocolate assortment needs a presentation box with a cavity for each piece, so the lid size can follow the filled tray.

The Packaging Challenge

Piece count and wrap thickness change the well. A lid drawn before the tray is locked will not close over the filled pack. A loose well lets pieces move when the box is opened or moved.

Our Solution

The outer box is developed around the tray. Tray layout follows actual piece count and dimensions. Fit, opening and loading are reviewed during sampling before production.

Why This Structure

A rigid gift box can be suitable when presentation and a stable well for the tray matter. It is not assumed for every chocolate program. A lighter seasonal pack may still sit in a folding carton. A shipped gift may need a mailer around the presentation box.

Development

Product requirements → structure and tray → material and artwork → sample → production. Timing is confirmed in the quotation, not as a fixed lead time on this page.

How to Choose the Right Chocolate Packaging

Use the paths below as a starting point. No structure is universally correct.

Need Starting point
Chocolate assortments Consider a rigid gift box or a folding carton with a custom tray when piece count and presentation matter.
Seasonal collections Consider whether the same tray and outer size can take a different sleeve or artwork.
Lightweight chocolate packs A folding paper box may be suitable, depending on the product and filling method.
Gift sets A rigid gift box, magnetic box or other presentation structure can be considered around the set.
E-commerce shipping Consider the presentation box together with a suitable outer shipping structure.

The right structure depends on the chocolate dimensions, piece count, presentation requirements, filling method and shipping conditions.

What We Need From You

You do not need every packaging specification finalized before contacting Jiayi. If you are still deciding on the box structure, send us your product dimensions and reference images first. We can review suitable packaging directions before the quotation is finalized.

FAQ

How should chocolate packaging accommodate different piece counts?

The tray is drawn from the count and piece size. A 9-piece and a 16-piece assortment are different inner layouts even if the outer graphic looks related.

Can chocolate packaging include custom inserts?

Yes. Trays are developed from the piece size and count. Card and molded pulp can be considered depending on the outline.

What packaging materials are suitable for gift presentation?

Greyboard and art paper are commonly used for chocolate gift lids. Tray material is selected with the piece and any food-contact requirement.

Can a seasonal design reuse the same box?

A sleeve or lid wrap can change when the tray and outer size stay the same. A new count still needs a new tray.

Do you print chocolate gift lids?

Yes. CMYK or Pantone, with foil or lamination where the lid panel allows. Print is placed after the lid size is locked.

How do I start a chocolate packaging project?

Send piece count, piece size, quantity and whether you need a gift lid or a lighter carton. The tray is proposed first.
